Conservative Morgantown businessman Bill Maloney has won West Virginia’s Republican special gubernatorial primary.
Maloney was among a field of eight Republicans that included former Betty Ireland, the state’s first woman to be elected to secretary of state.
Maloney, Democrat Earl Ray Tomblin, and Mountain Party candidate Bob Henry Baber now head toward a Oct. 4 general election. The winner then will serve out the term of former Democratic Gov. Joe Manchin.
Tomblin is the state Senate’s president. The state constitution has had him acting as governor since Manchin resigned Nov. 15.
