Solyndra: Scandal Of Political Influence Or Scandal Of Ineptitude?

At half a billion dollars, there is no doubt that Solyndra is a scandal. The only question is whether it is a scandal of bad judgement or a scandal of political influence.

Regardless of whether this is a case of corruption or ineptitude, it certainly doesn’t look good, politically speaking, for President Obama. The Chicago Tribune frames the primary issue perfectly: “[g]overnment loan guarantees to promote innovation aren’t a bad idea,” particularly given our country’s demand for energy, but “[i]f the federal government can’t responsibly manage the money it’s doling out in the name of economic stimulus, then it has no business doling out the money - period.”
