Rick Santorum Has His Eyes On 2016 For President: Team Romney, Political Analysts

Forget about 2012, Rick Santorum has his eyes set on 2016 — at least according to Team Romney.

Wayne Berman, a national finance co-chair for the ex-Massachusetts governor's presidential campaign, told Politico Friday that Santorum is going after Romney with guns blazing in hopes of securing his chances for the next presidential cycle.

Political analysts said it's not out of the question that Santorum is looking to the future because he knows he can't accrue the 1,144 delegates to cinch the nomination come the Republican National Convention in August.

"2016 is probably in the back of his mind," Republican strategist Ford O'Connell told the Daily News, pointing to Santorum's quip that Americans "might as well stay with what we have" instead of voting for Romney.

"His comments are detrimental to the party. With comments like that he's putting his ambitions ahead of the good of the party….I can understand the rigors of the campaign trail. But sometimes you have to put the breaks on your mouth," O'Connell added.

"Barring a cataclysmic event, Romney will be the nominee," O'Connell predicted.
