House GOP Will Offer Leadership Post To A Freshman

House Republicans are likely to add a seat for freshmen lawmakers at the leadership table, a nod to the importance of this large class and the anti-Washington sentiment that got them elected.

The representative, according to several GOP sources, would be chosen by freshmen — and it would represent the first time a rookie lawmaker will have such representation in high-level Republican decision making.

Several Republican sources signaled that recently elected Republican Kristi Noem of South Dakota is gunning for the position — a push that is unlikely to garner any serious challenge from GOP leadership. Republicans could benefit from a woman in the elected leadership circle and would further reap benefits from Noem’s close relations to the tea party. South Carolina’s Tim Scott may also run, according to a GOP aide.

The freshman representative would then be part of the “Elected Leadership Committee,” which makes almost every important decision for the House Republican Conference, ranging from legislation to policy to messaging.
