Ford O’Connell At Politico’s Arena: Huckabee’s Decision Not To Run, A Major Blow To GOP

For the candidates who need to perform well in Iowa (Pawlenty, Gingrich, Bachmann and Santorum), this is certainly welcome news. And while it may have been the right decision for Huckabee, it is a major blow to the Republican Party in its quest to unseat President Obama.

Huckabee, a favorite of social conservatives, was far from a sure thing to win the Republican nomination next year, but his presence in the race would have brought a broader coalition into the GOP tent to liven up the field and make the current crop of candidates that much stronger as a result.
