David Axelrod Defends New Dem Fundraising Groups Designed To Help Obama Win Reelection

Former White House senior adviser David Axelrod defended on Sunday two new independent fundraising groups created and designed to help President Barack Obama win re-election.

Priorities USA and Priorities USA Action aim to raise $100 million through committees that levy funds from both disclosed and undisclosed donors, as first reported in POLITICO Friday. Raising funds from undisclosed donors is a practice maligned by the president, but Axelrod said Sunday that barring legislative reform, Democrats have no choice and need to play on a level field with Republicans backed by donors such as the Koch brothers.

The two new groups certainly have Obama influence, with former White House deputy press secretary Bill Burton; Sean Sweeney, once a senior adviser to former chief of staff Rahm Emanuel, and former Clinton political strategist Paul Begala tabbed to run the organizations.
